About Envoy Proxy

Envoy is a high-performance C++ distributed proxy designed for single services and applications as well as a communication bus and universal data plane for large microservice mesh architectures.

It provides advanced load balancing including automatic retries, circuit breaking, rate limiting, and outlier detection. Envoy supports HTTP/2, gRPC, WebSocket, and TCP proxying natively.

The xDS API enables dynamic configuration without restarts, making it the data plane of choice for service meshes like Istio, Linkerd, and AWS App Mesh. Observability is built in with detailed statistics and distributed tracing.

Envoy is the standard proxy for service mesh data planes, used at massive scale by companies processing millions of requests per second.
